I love hearing about and trying new fantasy football pools. I heard about the “Power of 33″ several years ago and I thought it would be good to explain this one. Very simple game of luck. Get a group of people together and either draft teams or pick them out of a hat and hope to have the team that scores 33 points first in the nfl season. Pretty easy and even one that the wife and kids could enjoy. You can either do it as a flat fee to play or have the pool build up each week like a lottery. Here are some stats on the Power of 33 concept ; Since 1920 there have been 13,587 nfl games. The winning team has scored 33 points 209 times and the losing team has scored 33 points just 31 times. That’s less than a 2% chance that 33 points will be scored by a team in a game so you can see how a pool could build up over time. Except for last season, when 33 points were scored a whopping 7 times ( all by winning teams ). The last time a team has scored 33 points and lost was all the way back in the 2001 season when Pittsburgh beat Cleveland 36-33 in the wild card round. The most common way for a team to score 33 points is 3 TD’s with 3 extra points along with 4 field goals so if you are going to do the Power of 33 in a draft style format, grab those high powered offenses and hope for some luck.
