Preseason Defense / Special Teams Rankings Revealed

We have all heard the saying “Defense wins Championships” but I am not so sure when it comes to Fantasy Football. For me, Defense is just a notch above Kickers when it comes fantasy importance. I really don’t think too much about it before the draft to tell you the truth. I know there are some leagues out there that love the Defense factor of fantasy football but I’m not in that camp. You won’t see me in any IDP leagues.

Last year the number 1 Defense from a fantasy prospective was the Philadelphia Eagles averaging 8.7 points a game. The number 12 Defense was the Indianapolis Colts averaging 6.7 points a game. That’s just a 2 point difference from 1-12. Now, I realize every point in fantasy football is important and many games and seasons can come down to a point but you need to be realistic. A closer look at last year’s numbers show that if you take out the Eagles freakish Week 1 when they scored 27 fantasy points then the number 1 Defense was the New Orleans Saints averaging 8.3 points per game. Oh by the way, I picked up the Saints Defense off the waiver wire last year in Week 4 in a 12 team expert level league.

The Defense / Special Teams Rankings are posted above. I can’t imagine they will change too much prior to Week 1 but you never know with injuries. I like the Eagles again and I am not as high on the New York Jets as many of the corporate web sites are.

Draft Strategy Advice: As you can tell from above, I am not a big fan of drafting Defenses any earlier than your second to last pick. Avoid the Defense run that usually starts around Round 10 and use that as an opportunity to pick up an extra running back or quarterback while people are wasting their draft pick on a Defense. Don’t draft a backup Defense as you can aways find a quality Defense on the waiver wire two weeks prior to your main Defense’s Bye week (Always look to pick up Bye week replacements two weeks prior).

Kicking off the 2010 Season !!!

It’s been a long off season but it’s time to start getting back into fantasy football mode !

I had debated whether to come back for a second season with this web site and instead focus on the internet radio show and a weekly YouTube web cast but I am 99.9% sure I am going to focus most of my attention to Season 2 here at www.fantasy-football-first.com .

Before we start talking about the upcoming season, I’d like to take a brief moment to reflect on last season:

  • We went live on May 1, 2009 and in the first real column of the season I wrote about some 7th Round Super Sleepers in which I singled out 3 players including Rashad Jennings and Julian Edelman.  Not bad considering both had some fantasy value last season and their future looks bright.
  • During the course of the season, we had 43,058 unique site visits which some people say is pretty good for a blog like this.  I feel especially grateful for the 100 or so that took their time and actually sent me an email saying that they enjoyed what I was doing.
  • My Waiver Wire Pick Up column was featured on the web site FantasyXperts.com for being a top site for Waiver Wire advice in the small web site category.
  • My Point Spread Picks for the season went 138-123-5 which is isn’t too shabby so I didn’t lose anyone money.
  • I had a perfect season in my Survivor Pool Picks so if you followed my picks every week you would have won your league.  I did feel guilty about winning the Pool that I run on this web site because of how that looks but in my defense, I posted my picks for everyone to see on Wednesdays and never changed it.
  • We had some very generous people that made Donations so I was able to run this site and subscribe to different periodicals for information at a minimal loss so the Wife didn’t mind too much.

We had a good first season and I am eager to get the ball rolling on Season 2.  I am going to post 2 Poll questions to get some feedback on what people liked and would like to see more of.  As always, thanks for reading and keep checking back.  Feel free to email me any suggestions you may have for this site.  I do read and respond to every email.
